Identify Barrel Shoulder

MFMD is designed to fit a variety of barrel shoulder profiles. Examine the following diagrams to determine which shoulder profile matches your weapon system.

90-Degree Shoulder

This shoulder profile is the most common. During MFMD installation, the shim mounting surface will be the 90-degree shoulder surface.

Tapered Shoulder

This shoulder profile relates primarily to SIG Sauer weapon systems. If applicable, your MFMD will be supplied with a tapered barrel adapter. During MFMD installation, the shim mounting surface will be the surface of the adapter.

No Shoulder

This shoulder profile is less common. During MFMD installation, the shim mounting surface will be the bare muzzle crown.

Measure OTB Clearance

For optimal performance, MFMD is designed with an over-the-barrel (OTB) region that extends behind the mounting face. Some MFMD models are available in a flush-mount (zero OTB) configuration that does not extend behind the mounting face.
To support an OTB configuration, your barrel must have a certain amount of unobstructed length to clear the OTB region. The total amount of unobstructed barrel length is called the OTB clearance. Measuring the OTB clearance accurately is critical for determining the compatible MFMD models for your weapon system.
In most cases, the OTB clearance is limited by the position of the handguard. In addition to clearing the OTB region of the MFMD, the OTB clearance must include a minimum 3/16-inch air gap between the handguard and the rear of the MFMD. In this step you will measure the total OTB clearance assuming a minimum air gap, and the Configurator will automatically ensure the minimum air gap is satisfied.
Based on the barrel shoulder profile selected in the previous step, examine the following diagram to accurately measure the OTB clearance of your weapon system.
Shoulder Measurement

Measure the OTB clearance from the shoulder face rearward to the handguard. Measure all the way to the handguard including the margin for the air gap.
Tapered Barrel Measurement

Measure the OTB clearance from the end of the taper (the base of the threads) to the handguard. Measure all the way to the handguard including the margin for the air gap.
Crown Measurement

Measure the OTB clearance from the muzzle crown rearward to the handguard. Measure all the way to the handguard including the margin for the air gap.
